The values underpinning the approach

    The secret behind talent

Marijke’s unique approach rests on four core values. They inspire her to teach her students the artistic, emotional, mental and technical abilities needed to let their talent flourish. Studying with Marijke, you learn more than just playing the piano. And maybe that is the biggest secret behind her teaching talent.

Making music is about being authentic

Marijke talks about what drives her as a teacher.

“As a child, I became aware of how you can tell stories with sound, how you can bring a whole world to life with your playing. I felt the power of music – much more than words – to connect people. This I discovered while playing and exploring. So many things around and within us can inspire us and are ready to be shown and shared through music.”

“Making music is giving. It is focusing your attention and using it to touch those around you with the sounds you create. That means giving yourself, being real, having the courage to show yourself to others. For that, you have to be strong and sensitive at once. You need to maintain the balance between surrender and control, between discipline and freedom that refuses to be tamed.”

    A patient and loving coach

“As a teacher, it is all about what you have to offer your students. My goal is to get my students to the point where they are glad about who they are and what they do. I let them discover and shape their own personalities, without forcing anything on them. I approach them with an open mind.”

    Discovering the need for discipline

“Of course, being a musician also takes commitment, practice, technique and perseverance. I have observed that self-found discipline tends to come naturally through the need to practice. You end up teaching yourself to be critical of what your fingers are doing, all while trusting them to do what is needed. For that, you need to stay curious and confident and keep listening to the score and the sound. I help my students to gradually come into their own and take responsibility for their own development.”
